in 1967, kathrine switzer was the first woman to run the boston marathon. after realizing that a woman was running, race organizer jock semple went after switzer shouting, “get the hell out of my race and give me those numbers.” however, switzer’s boyfriend and other male runners provided a protective shield during the entire marathon. the photographs taken of the incident made world headlines, and kathrine later won the NYC marathon with a time of 3:07:29. kim jung-ae (a pseudonym), 62, hides in a house in northern china. the elderly woman left north korea in mid-2006 as she didn’t want to wait to die. as a retiree and disabled person , she had no income and was obliged to live on herbs and grass she collected in the mountains. her son died two years ago of starvation. one day she suddenly decided that she had nothing more to loose in north korea and secretly crossed the border to china. suffering from a lame leg, it took her 5 days to stumble to the next town in order to find food and shelter, supported by a few sympathetic ethnic koreans living along the road.
kim survives in china by reselling garbage she collects in the streets. she makes between 30-50 cent eu/day.
